EU Postpones Mandatory ETIAS for Visa-Exempt Travelers to 2027

The European Union has confirmed that the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will become mandatory from April 2027, giving travelers from visa-exempt countries additional time to prepare.

Originally expected to launch earlier, the system has been aligned with the rollout of the Entry/Exit System (EES), which is now set for October 2025.

EES Rollout in 2025 Sets the Timeline for ETIAS

The EES, a new digital border management system, will begin operations in October 2025.

Once fully implemented, ETIAS will follow approximately six months later, meaning that travelers can expect it to be operational around October 2026.

Phased Introduction Provides Transition Periods

To ensure a smooth transition, the EU has introduced two grace periods:

  • Transitional Period (October 2026 - April 2027): ETIAS will be recommended but not yet required, allowing travelers to adjust before full enforcement.
  • Grace Period for First-Time Visitors (April 2027 - October 2027): Travelers visiting the EU for the first time during this phase will be permitted entry without ETIAS, provided they meet other entry conditions.

This structured timeline aims to give travelers, airlines, and border authorities adequate time to adapt while ensuring smoother implementation of the new entry system.
